Welcome to Webteic: Build More Than a Website Photo

Webteic started with a simple idea: building a modern website should not mean choosing between an easy visual tool and a platform developers can properly work with.

We wanted both.

Webteic is an open-source CMS and web platform designed for websites that need to grow beyond pages and content. It combines a visual website-building experience with the structure needed to manage members, organisations, events, memberships, products, services and more.

The goal is not to replace every specialist application. It is to provide a strong, coherent foundation that lets developers, designers and organisations build more without having to assemble a large collection of unrelated systems.

A website on the surface. A platform underneath.

For many projects, the public website is only one part of what needs to be built.

Behind it there may also be administrators managing content, members accessing private information, organisations managing their own areas, customers purchasing services, attendees registering for events or users subscribing to memberships.

Webteic was designed around those kinds of projects.

A Webteic installation can bring together three connected experiences:

  • the public website
  • the member workspace
  • the administration platform

They share the same underlying content, users, permissions and platform services rather than operating as separate systems.

Start with what you need

Webteic v1.0 is built around a core platform with optional first-party modules.

Projects can use the features they need without installing everything by default.

The initial module set includes Blog, Events, Groups, Memberships, Payments, Projects and Store & Services.

These modules are designed to work together. An event can involve payments and attendees. A membership can control access and roles. A Group can represent a branch, organisation, club, location or other entity and connect with content, memberships and events.

The aim is straightforward:

More ready to build. Less left to assemble.

Visual when it saves time. Open when the project needs more.

Webteic includes a frontend visual editor for creating responsive pages, reusable sections and page layouts.

But the visual tools do not hide the platform underneath.

Developers can work directly with themes, module layouts and application code when deeper customisation is required. Webteic is self-hosted and built on a familiar PHP and MySQL stack, with a lightweight, modernised CodeIgniter-based MVC core.

That balance is important to us.

Designers should be able to build without needing to write code for every change. Developers should still be able to understand what the system is doing and take control when a project demands it.

Open source and self-hosted

Webteic v1.0 is being prepared for its public open-source release.

The platform is self-hosted, so organisations and developers remain in control of their infrastructure, database, source code and website.

A guided browser-based installer handles server checks, database configuration, administrator setup and module selection, helping take a new installation from download to a working platform quickly.

What comes next

This website is the beginning of the public Webteic project.

Over the coming weeks we will publish more documentation, examples and information for developers, designers and organisations interested in building with the platform.

The next major update here will be the Webteic v1.0 release announcement, including the public source repository and download.

For now, you can explore the platform, its modules and the different kinds of websites and online services Webteic is designed to support.
